Faro (or Pharaoh, or the non-casino variant Stuss) is a gambling game. It is simple and fast-moving, and was highly popular among high society in Europe from the 17th to the 19th century and in North America in the 19th century. Faro was the game at which the young Count Rostov, in Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace", lost a fortune.
