The Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France
The American-born Whistler was based in the UK and was painting in London at the time. However, the British art establishment and Whistler were increasingly at odds. He eventually pawned the painting and the French government acquired it in 1891. It is one of the most famous works by an American artist held in a gallery outside the US.
