William Forsythe
Forsythe, initially a dancer and subsequently an internationally recognised choreographer, long-time director of Frankfurt Ballet and then his own troupe, is known for work of both abstraction and forceful theatricality, incorporating the spoken word, experimental music, video, an extreme physical vocabulary, art installations, and installations featuring architecture and performance which he calls Choreographic Objects. "Urlicht" was created when Forsythe was 23, using the alto solo from Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony. It prompted his appointment as resident choreographer at the Stuttgart Ballet.
