Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico was given commonwealth status as a self-governing territory in 1952. Since that it has held referendums in 1967, 1993, 1998, 2012 and 2017 to choose, in broad terms, between its existing status, becoming an independent country, or becoming a state in the United States. A further referendum, held in 2020, asked just whether Puerto Rico should seek to become a state in the US. The result was a narrow yes; discussions with the US continue.
