One of the competitors in the team which scored highest tested positive for a banned drug
The competitor was 15 year old Kamila Valieva (team Russian Olympic Committee - ROC). She had taken a drug test in December 2021 which was revealed, just after the Olympics team events ended on 7 February 2022, to be positive for a banned substance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed Valieva to compete in later singles events but delayed awarding the medals in the team event until the legal situation around the doping was resolved. This resulted in a delay of several months.
