De Meijer, who immigrated from the Netherlands when she was 12, reflects on the ways language is linked to place and memory, how our early experiences with speech stick with us, things missing in translation, disconnectedness and feeling divided. The book won the Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction in 2021 in Canada.
