Valentina Tereshkova
At the time of her selection, Tereshkova was 10 years younger than the youngest American astronaut. Launched in Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963, she orbited the earth 48 times and spent nearly 3 days in space (logging more flight time than that of all American astronauts who had flown previously).
