Both novel has been written by Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese author José Saramago. It was published in Portuguese in 2004 and in English in 2006. It is a sequel to one of his most famous works, Blindness.

Blindness is one of his most famous novels, along with The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Baltasar and Blimunda.
