Gujarat And Tamil Nadu

Gujarat was the first state in India to require that students learn chess. This is a bid to improve the cognitive skills of the students. Tamil Nadu has adopted Gujarat's strategy of introducing chess in all schools in an apparent bid to improve cognitive skills of students. The unique initiative, to be launched next academic year, is aimed at exposing students, especially those from "educationally backward" districts, to the rudiments of the game.
