At the base do I sit,
at first glance, appear I, a misfit.
For among my peers, I seem colossal,
my company, I jostle.
My duty is quite simple you see,
separate those not in harmony.
Without me, everything would be jumbled as a whole,
but at my beckon, I cut between, making it no longer sole.
I guarantee I am something you have seen many a time,
so tell me this, what am I which cuts, but am never convicted of a crime?

I am never quite what I appear to be. Straight-forward I seem, but it's only skin deep, for mystery most often lies beneath my simple speech. Sharpen your wits, open your eyes, look beyond my exteriors, read me backwards, forwards, upside down. Think critically and answer the question...What am I?

I run around the streets all day. Under the bed or by the door I sit at night, never alone. My tongue hangs out, waiting to be fed during the day. What am I?
