What is the distance between the two stations?

Two trains start at the same time from Jaipur and Agra and proceed towards each other at 16 kmph and 24 kmph respectively.
When they meet it is found that one train has traveled 72 km more than the other.
What is the distance between the two stations?

Time taken by both the the trains to reach the meeting point are the same.
If distance travelled by the slower train to the meeting point = d
Then faster train travels = d + 72
Now
(d + 72)/24 = d/16
d = 144 Km

Distance between the 2 stations
= d + ( d+ 72 ) = 144 + ( 144 + 72 ) = 360 Km.

X = distance travelled by train leaving Jaipur
T = period of time elapsed from leaving the stations till both trains meet
We can write two equations
16 x T = X ( train leaving from Jaipur)
24 x T = X + 72
Solving the system of two equations ,
X = 144 Km and T = 9 hr
Then the total distance beween Jaipur and Agra is 144 + 144 + 72 = 360 Km
