Although much water you see,
by definition, "desert" fits me.
In the winter I double in size,
but staying away is a word for the wise.
I am very windy, that is a clue.
What am I?

I live and thrive in the winter as I grow down and sharpen but you’ll never see me in the summer because I’ll die in warmth.

I'm a shape shifter varied in colour and size
But when you see me I'm easy to recognize

At times a shady character, other times not
I might be able to help you in a hot spot

Usually unemployed in the season of cold
But working year-round if you are willing to hold

With your assistance I act as a lightweight shield
So as to counteract what the heavens may yield

I always follow my brother,
although very different we are.
You can see him, but not me.
You can hear me, but not him.

I come during winter,
But leave during summer.
You'll see me at night,
And maybe during day,
But one time you'll never see me,
Is without heat in my bay.

You’re out on the water and see a boat filled with people. You look away for a second and look back again, but this time you don’t see a single person on the boat. Why? Hint: The boat did not sink.
