The cube of -1 is equal to -1.

(-1)3
= (-1)(-1)(-1)
= -1

If you type cube root of -1 into WolframAlpha, you get

cuberoot(-1) = -1

But what happens if you try a fractional exponent of 1/3? You should get the same result, but instead you get a totally different result of a complex number!

(-1)1/3 = 1/2 + (i√3)/2

Why are the results different? What’s going on?

A goose saw flying geese on the sky and asked: hey 100 geese, where are you going to? One of the geese answered: we are not 100, if you add as much as we are, if you add as half of us, if you add as quarter of us and if you join as well we will be 100. Can you find, how many geese are flying on the sky?
