Sardar Singh is an Indian professional field hockey player. He was the captain of the Indian national team till Hockey India named senior goalkeeper P. R. Shreejesh as the captain of the national team for the Rio Olympics. He usually plays the center half position.
Sardar Singh made his first international appearance against Poland in 2003. His senior team debut was in 2006 played against Pakistan.
Sardar Singh became the youngest player to captain the Indian team when he led the side at the 2008 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup at the age of 22.
Apart from captaining the national team, the hockey star also plays for his State Haryana and is a Deputy Superintendent Police in the State.
He was the highest-paid marquee player at the inaugural Hockey India League auctions as Delhi bought him for 42.49 lakh rupees. He was adjudged the Player of the Tournament.
Not many know that his brother Didar Singh is also a hockey player and has represented Haryana State at national level and also Chandigarh Dynamos team in PHL.
He was adjudged the Player of the Tournament in the 2012 Summer Olympics Qualifiers, where India won the Gold.
He was also awarded the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award twice, in the 2010 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup where India won the Gold and 2012 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup where India finished third to win the Bronze. Sardar has also the captain of the Indian team that came second to win the silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 2015.
