A locomotive and a train pulled by a horse
The locomotive was called Tom Thumb and was designed, built and owned by the industrialist, philanthropist, anti-slavery activist and inventor Peter Cooper. The horse-drawn train won, but the locomotive lost only thanks to a mechanical mal-function, and was clearly a candidate to replace horse-drawn transport.
