A week before opening several venues were not even started and athletes' accommodation not booked. The 17th Winter Deaflympics were cancelled a week before they were due to open on 18 February in Slovakia, and when athletes were already at the venue. The local organiser and an accomplice were later found guilty of embezzling the funds (approximately,11m).
