Grunting in tennis is the very loud noise,sometimes described as "shrieking" or "screaming",made by some players while hitting their shots. It is prominent in both men's and women's tennis. Many players and spectators find it to be distracting or obnoxious above a certain sound level. Conventional wisdom says that players grunt because it allows them to hit the ball harder.
