IMS architecture has defined mainly three types of application server.
- SIP application server
- Open Service Architecture (OSA) server
- Customized applications for mobile network using enhanced logic (CAMEL)

Also MMTel (multimedia telephony application server), IP-SM-GW: IP SMS Gateway to enable SMS to be sent through IMS.
