What is Material Design?
Material design is a comprehensive guide for visual, motion, and interaction design across platforms and devices. It is Fluid and purposeful motion.
The fundamentals of light, surface, and movement are key to conveying how objects move, interact, and exist in space in relation to each other. Realistic lighting shows seams, divides space, and indicates moving parts.
Material Design establishes principles for Animation, Style, Layout, comes with recommendations for a large number of visual components –buttons, cards, grids, dialogs, etc.- and related actions and gestures, and includes accessibility guidelines.

Comparison of Android Lollipop with Android Kitkat
Comparing to Kitkat, lollipop has better UI visual enhancements. Google has maintained the flat look from Android KitKat but also adds in some punch with real time shadows and animation to give Lollipop more depth and dynamic.
From icons to navigation buttons, notification bars, fonts, and other design elements, Material Design is meant to make Android's look more unified and give developers more ways to have creative visualization in their apps.
Lollipop will also be able to set certain geographic safe zones, where the unlock patterns will also be unnecessary.
Android Lollipop makes your smartphone smarter by presenting you notifications when you pick it up. As the user, you also decide what you prioritize first, an incoming phone call or that game you are so addicted to.
It also finally introduces a "Do Not Disturb" mode so that you can ignore all spam and work emails during set hours of the day, and still receive emergency or other calls and messages from certain contacts.
