why Git named so?

Does anybody know why Git named so? If translate "git" to russian it sound like scoundrel.

It was a play on words by Linux Torvalds. He says it was named after himself. Though their is no clear reason but check http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=git

I would like to know why GIT calculates checksum of a file.Typically, checksum is used for the purpose of integrity. An example would really help.

I just want to know why GIT doesnt track read/write permission? What I want is just GIT keep what every I checked in? ( I am OK with the executable permission control)

Is there a particular reason or is it that it's just not bothered being built that often that new versions of Git is released?

How can I build new versions of Git myself?

When run that command immediate after "git bisect start" somebody sees the full commit range as defined in "git bisect start".

However running that command later after few git bisect steps" somebody is just presented with the remaining commit interval. Is this intended ?
