In case of gNB, protocol stack towards UE for control and user planes would be based on 5G technology while in case of ng-eNB, protocol stack towards UE would be same as LTE. In both the cases gNB and ng-eNB, connectivity towards core network would be based on NG interface.

gNB provides 5G protocol architecture to serve UE in-terms of user plane and control plane messages
ng-eNB provides LTE/E-UTRAN protocol architecture to serve UE in-terms of user plane and control plane messages
