Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access: Few days back I read the Forbes magazine and i found the top 10 technologies are going to change our lives as the way we are living rite now and one of them was emerging Wi-Max technology. Now the question is how complex it is. Will it replace the wi-fi or will it be complete the 3gpp technologies like 3g/4g. So lets see some technical aspects of this technology then we will move on to the benefits of this.

So first question is the difference between W-FI and Wi-Max?
Wi-Max is same like Wi-Fi but it has higher data rate speed over greater distances and can retain more users. It's main purpose is Internet Everywhere. WiMAX will take desktop computing and change smoothly it into the mobile laptop. It can able to make your laptop mobile anywhere you want with internet connectivity. Like same way you are carrying your mobile phone with you.

WiMAX is designed to deliver broadband multimedia data ubiquitously over wireless links. It is mainly consists of two things. A tower and receiver.

A WiMAX tower: Similar in concept to a cell-phone tower - A single WiMAX tower can provide coverage to a very large area -- as big as 3,000 square miles (~8,000 square km).

A WiMAX receiver: The receiver and antenna could be a small box or PCMCIA card, or they could be built into a laptop the way WiFi access is today.

Wi-max benefit over wifi and cellular systems?
WiFi provides high bandwidth but not distance, current cellular systems provide distance but not high bandwidth where Wi-Max provides both.

Wi-Max will give uninterrupted a rich variety of high-bandwidth services to users, only around offices, homes, coffee shops, airports, and hotels, urban and sub-urban areas.
