MongoDB: What is the need of indexing and how it works ?

Indexing provides fast read operations for search operation. Without having indexes for a collection, takes more time comparatively having indexes. A collection which have similar type of documents, I mean to say all the documents have similar key:value pairs indexing doesn't help.
