Danny Denzongpa was the first choice of Gabbar but had to miss out because he was shooting for Dharmatma in Afghanistan. Many also believe that the role was offered to Amitabh Bachchan but he was not interested in the villain role. Finally role was offered to the Amjad Khan whole made the true justice to the characters. However it must be remembered that Amjad Khan was almost dropped from the project because Javed Akhtar found his voice too weak for Gabbar Singh's role but was later convinced.
