The Bells of St Mary's (1945)

The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) was a sequel to the previous year's Going My Way (1944) - which lost to The Lost Weekend (1945). Other sequels (or second and third installments) that were nominated for Best Picture include The Godfather, Part II (1974) and The Godfather, Part III (1990). Also, although the Best Picture-nominated sequel The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) lost, its 'sequel' The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) was a Best Picture winner.
