The album was among Shakur's last recorded work, completed in August 1996 about a month before his murder (at the age of 25) in a drive by shooting and released posthumously in November. The pseudonym of Makaveli is described as having stemmed from Shakur's reading of the works of Niccolò Machiavelli during a term in prison in 1995. In an interview with Vibe Shakur said Machiavelli was an influence, "Now I'm dealing with a more military type of philosophy to mix the street life with respected, known and proven military philosophy".
