Cruelty at its peak..
This was Aurangzeb who enforced shariya law in India. Military power was at its peak during Aurangzeb's reign

Why was it introduced and how was it abolished?
Well..there are mixed views on it
1. He was extremist.. a Sunni Muslim
So he never tolerated practices of other religions not even Siya Muslim's.
2. This one is soft... Aurangzeb wanted a true Islam based governance so he enforced shariya.
But history goes with 1 view.

Cause of abolition was..
Later rulers neither extremists nor powerful as him
Wonderful, thanks for the clarification.
