Shershah Suri was the first ruler of India to introduce the silver coin named "Rupiya". He was the founder of the Sur Empire in North India, with its capital at Delhi.
While the term Rupiya had previously been used as a generic term for any silver coin, during his rule the term rupiya came to be used as the name for a silver coin of a standard weight of 178 grains.
