Marian (or Mary Ann) Evans, who wrote "The Mill On The Floss" and "Silas Marner" is better known as George Elliot. She wrote under the pen name George Elliot in order to conceal her identity as a woman as it was not socially acceptable for a woman to write and publish books and to be educated to that level.
