Queen Salote was Queen of Tonga. A very large lady, with a huge personality. I remember her, at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. She sat in her open carriage in the procession from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, in the rain, under an umbrella, waving merrily to the crowds and beaming from ear to ear. She was a massive success with everyone, many of whom had camped out for days to get a good position to see the world’s royalty and dignitaries.
