The USSR's R-7 was the first intercontinental ballistic missile and orbital launch vehicle (1957); the USSR's (and subsequently Ukraine's) Zenit was a series of military photoreconnaissance satellites, launched beginning 1961; the USSR's Luna 1 carried the first data communications, or telemetry, to and from outer space.
