Observe the planet Mars, in orbit and on the surface
Viking I and Viking II were space probes sent to Mars on 20 August and 9 September respectively, each with a lander and a second part to orbit the planet. The orbiting parts in particular revealed the past action of large amounts of water on the planet. The craft ended their mission and shut down between 19 June and 3 September 1976.
