A line of poetry
An alexandrine is a line of poetry of 12 syllables. In the French form the line has major stresses on the 6th syllable and last syllables, and one secondary accent in each half line. It is known as the heroic line in French poetry. In the English form the line has six primary accents rather than the two major and two secondary accents.
