The resignation and dissolution is seen as the result of the Napoleonic Wars and of direct military pressure from Napoléon Bonaparte. The first Emperor, Charlemagne, of what in the 12 century became the Holy Roman Empire was crowned in 800 CE. Corsica was not part of the Holy Roman Empire at the time, and a vaccine against cholera was not developed in Europe until the end of the 19th century.
