The movement, also known as the Brotherhood of Saint Luke, was dubbed The Nazarenes in reference to their preferred biblical style of dress and appearance. The artists were inspired by late Mediaeval and early Renaissance art, and aimed to embody moral or religious and spiritual values, in their work. They worked and lived together in a semimonastic style, aiming to return to the teaching style of the medieval workshop.
