A small, highly manoeuvrable sailing ship
The small, agile, powerful and speedy caravel was developed in about 1451, based on existing fishing boats and under the sponsorship of Henry the Navigator of Portugal. It was developed to explore the west coast of Africa, and later in the 15th and 16th centuries was used by the Portuguese and Spanish for oceanic exploration.
