Hibernia
Greek explorers and writers called the island Ierne or Iouernia, a Greek transliteration of the Q-Celtic name from which Ériu and Éire come; the original meaning of the Celtic name is thought to be "abundant land". The Roman historian Tacitus is thought possibly to have seen a connection with the Latin word hibernus meaning wintry and in his book Agricola (c. 98 AD) he uses the name Hibernia.
