Dance
Tharp is known as both dancer and choreographer, and as one whose creative vision, according to the Academy of Achievement, has had a pervasive influence on the work of younger choreographers and has permanently expanded the boundaries of contemporary dance. She has choreographed over 160 works, including work for Broadway, film and television, and written four influential books. Tharp was named a MacArthur fellow in 1992 and was awarded the USA's National Medal of Arts in 2004 and named a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2008 for lifetime achievement; among many other awards are a Tony, two Emmys, and 19 honorary doctorates (as well being a Doctor of Arts from Harvard University).
