Nationalisation of the British East India Company
Following the rebellion the British government nationalised the East India Company and the Crown assumed direct control of Indian affairs, beginning a period known as the British Raj. Criminalisation of suttee and new rifle cartridges were introduced before the rebellion and were some of the reasons for it.
