The release of doves
Doves had been released in the 1896 Olympics, the first in the current Olympic Games era, as part of the closing ceremony. However, in Antwerp, the first Games after the end of hostilities in the First World War, one soldier for each country's team released a dove as a symbol of peace when the Games opened, and the practice of the symbol of peace in the opening ceremony has continued, although not, since 1992, with live doves.
