The term is also used for the pad a fencer wears to protect their chest, a steel breastplate worn beneath a hauberk, a 19th century lace or embroidered bodice front, or (in an aquatic insect) a patch of cuticle covered with hairs which retain a thin layer of air that acts like a gill for breathing under water.
