Japan
The colonisers forced the at least 6,000 year old tribes of Austronesian-speaking indigenous peoples to relocate, mix, break up, urbanise, and eventually rename themselves in the conquerors' language. Taiwan was ruled by Japan from 1895 to 1945, and since 1945, when Japan ceded control following its surrender at the end of World War II, has been under control of the Republic of China. The Republic of China continued and strengthened the policies to eliminate the indigenous language and culture.
