Making woollen cloth
Dating back to the Middle Ages and beyond, woollen cloth after being woven, washed and fulled was stretched between sharp tenterhooks on a board to keep it in shape and prevent shrinkage as it dried. The phrase is used as a metaphor for being taut with nervous anticipation.
