Dodo
An estimated extinction date for the dodo is 1693, with a 95% confidence interval of 16881715. Relatives of the dodo, also on islands in the Indian Ocean, the Rodrigues solitaire and the Réunion solitaire, are also assumed extinct - by about 1746 and 1790 respectively. Their closest living genetic relative is the Nicobar pigeon. The roc, phoenix and gryphon have not been sighted in the flesh; they are accepted as mythical.
