King of Sweden and Norway
In 1810 Jean Bernadotte, a member by marriage of Napoléon Bonaparte's family and a Marshal of the new French Empire, was elected heir to Sweden's childless King Charles XII. In 1814 the now Crown Prince added Norway to Sweden's rule. He ruled the two countries from 1818 until his death in 1844. In the list of Swedish kings he is Charles XIV John, in that for Norwegian kings he is King Charles III John.
