George V
Victoria was of the House of Hanover. Her son, Edward VII who succeeded her on the throne, was of the house of Saxe-Coburg Gotha, the house of his father Prince Albert. During the First World War, fought mainly against German forces, there was vigorous anti-German feeling, even more anti-Gotha feeling after a German heavy aircraft of that name began bombing London directly in March 1917. In July 1917, Edward VII's son, George V who was now king resigned all titles held under the German Crown and adopted the style as the House and Family of Windsor.
