Umberto II
Umberto II came to the throne in 1946, was pressured to call a referendum on whether Italy would retain the monarchy, and the vote was for a republic. Victor Emmanuel was the first king (1861-78) of the recent reunified kingdom; Bonaparte was king (1805-1814) of the north of the peninsula; Constantine was emperor of the Roman Empire (306-337) the first to convert to Christianity.
