The deposing of the king
King James II and VII of England, Scotland and Ireland was Catholic, and when his son was born (and Catholic), a group of English politicians invited Willem III of Orange, husband of James's Protestant older daughter Mary to take the throne for Mary. William landed with his Dutch forces, the Royal army joined him and James was deposed and went into exile. Willem and Mary were crowned joint King and Queen. The primacy of Parliament over the Crown was established the next year, in the Bill of Rights 1689.
