Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarus (1849–1887) wrote "The New Colossus", a sonnet, in 1883 and, in 1903; it is engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. Lazarus was a poet, widely known also for her prose works and translations, and an advocate on behalf of indigent immigrants. The poem was donated to an auction to raise funds to build the Statue's pedestal.
