Latin
Pliny (23 to 79 CE) was a Roman naturalist and natural philosopher, naval and army commander, and the author of the celebrated "Naturalis Historia" (Natural History), an encyclopaedic and erratically accurate work which was nevertheless a much respected authority until the Middle Ages. His other works include writings on grammar, a biography of Pomponius Secundus, a history of Rome, a study of the Roman campaigns in Germany, and a book on hurling the lance.
